Biography

João Moreira is a young composer from Lisbon, Portugal, currently based between London, UK and Lisbon.

​

In October 2020, at the age of 16, he began his music studies with his teacher and mentor, David Miguel, at Academia de Música de Telheiras, where he was introduced to the world of contemporary composition.

​

In 2020, João applied and was one of the 6 selected to participate in MATA Jr. (organised by MATA Festival), where his piece Inferno was premiered by the Bergamot Quartet, in New York City.

​

He attended an online course at Berklee College of Music and also masterclasses by Pierluigi Billone, Franck Bedrossian and Luís Naón, had the opportunity to study with Mark Andre, Samuel Andreyev, Ali Can Puskulcu, Gabriele Vanoni, have his work critiqued by Fabian Panisello, João Quinteiro, Jaime Reis and Pierluigi Billone and hear his music performed in 5 different countries (Portugal, Spain, USA, Austria and the UK) while working with ensembles such as the PHACE Ensemble, Ensemble DME, Bergamot Quartet, Solem Quartet, ConcrèteLab, Ars Ad Hoc, soloists such as Irvine Arditti (Arditti Quartet), Éric-Maria Couturier (Intercontemporain), Mathilde Hourisangou (PHACE), Carl Rosman (Musikfabrik/ELISION) and the Portuguese Youth Orchestra (JOP).

In October 2022 he was awarded commissions by Arte no Tempo for the Ars Ad Hoc Ensemble, as a result of a Call for Scores, and for renowned oboist Tiago Coimbra.

 

In September 2022, João started his composition studies at the Royal Academy of Music, in London, under the guidance of Helen Grime MBE while being privately mentored by João Quinteiro. His music is currently published by the Centro de Investivação & Informação da Música Portuguesa.
